SCVNGR — the location-based mobile app that takes a really creative approach to the space — is teaming up with Columbia Pictures to help promote the upcoming film, Eat Pray Love. The movie, which stars Julia Roberts, is about a woman who goes on a yearlong sabbatical to find herself. First she explores the pleasure of food in Italy, followed by spending time studying prayer in India and finally finds love in Bali. The concept behind...

Despite the bungled launch and short hiatus, Twitter Places is back in action. The feature has huge implications for the geo-location space and the location-sharing movement. Places is a big improvement on Twitter’s previous geo-location offering, which was never widely adopted or embraced by the majority of users. Whereas before users had to adjust their settings and agree to posting every single tweet with their geo-coordinates, now...

0 Points Twitter has announced yet another exciting new feature this week – Twitter Places, an exciting new feature that allows users to tag their tweets with specific places – for example, any of the World Cup stadiums in South Africa. Additionally, users will be able to create Twitter Places… This is a content summary only, please visit twittown.com for the full article.  Read More →

UMapper is a neat little tool I was sent a link to investigate.  It can actually map anything into a custom map, but tweets are our focus here.  I created a map for a recent conference, easily zooming into the city it was held.  Surprisingly, it was fast and a great way to see what people were talking about with their avatars showing. The engine is so powerful and I would encourage you to watch the tutorials as well as make some for your...

0 Points We’ve long known that Facebook is soon to be releasing some kind of locational features, tapping into the rising popularity of “check-in” services which let users report where they are. Foursquare, one of the frontrunners of the check-in craze, recently announced that it had… This is a content summary only, please visit twittown.com for the full article.  Read More →

0 Points According to an article in AdvertisingAge yesterday, the launch of the new Facebook location features is right around the corner. Of particular interest is the fact that McDonalds, thanks to a large advertising buy, has been granted permission to be the first company on board to use the… This is a content summary only, please visit twittown.com for the full article.  Read More →

MyTweetMap is a very simple Google Maps mashup offered by a school district.  You enter your Twitter username and password (no oAuth) and it starts mapping out your friends locations.  It was fast responding for a few hundred people that I follow.  Otherwise, not too exciting and you cannot fully act on the tweets.  Great for a quick showing geographically of who you follow.  Read More →

Earlier this afternoon, Google announced Google Buzz , a semantic approach to social status updates that live inside Gmail. The demonstration video showed off some of what you can do with Buzz on your desktop — but what seems really exciting is what Buzz can do in your pocket. Android and iPhone Optimized Sites If you visit http://buzz.google.com on your iPhone or Android device, you’ll be taken to a WebKit-optimized interface for...

The hardcore early adopters of Twitter will remember a time when even the use of the @ symbol preceding a person’s name was “homespun” – it wasn’t built into the Twitter architecture in the way that it is now; rather, it was created by Twitter’s users themselves, who spread the idea through the… This is a content summary only, please visit twittown.com for the full article.  Read More →

Geomeme is a very busy interface, but does a great job of identifying (you are asked first) your location and showing tweets around you.  From there you can view hot hashtags or search for your own.  It is all wrapped around a Google map mash showing the location of the people sending the tweets themselves. Rotating tag clouds take up the bottom left and right corners, which is nice and spinny, but quite  Read More →

A few months back we reported that Twitter was developing a geolocational API to embed location information into your tweets – and in the same post, spoke out against the feature, calling it an invitation for trouble. The geolocational feature, which is entirely on an opt-in basis, would allow… This is a content summary only, please visit twittown.com for the full article.  Read More →

We learned yesterday at 140TC that Twitter’s location aware functionality is going live any day now , and today Platform Product Manager Ryan Sarver revealed some further details about the mechanics of the upcoming Twitter Local features. According to a report from Gina Trapani , the location functionality will be totally opt-in to the user. In other words, location data will only be stored for your tweets if you explicitly enable the...

TwitArea is a Firefox 3.0.11 or higher add-on to allow you to share locations quickly and easily.  These places are not necessarily where you are located, but could be you talking about a place in general, like a restaurant. The extension adds a new button to the web Twitter interface to find a place, by address, phone number or name, and then send a tweet containing a link, contact info, location and even votes and comments from other users....

GeoChirp pleasantly surprised me with the sleek interface and immediate usefulness.  You get immediate function without logging in.  It guesses your current location and shows it on the map and starts to bring in tweets at the bottom. You are able to enter any address, number of tweets and miles radius.  You can also simply drag the placemarker around on the screen to another location and zoom in and out.  If you need to see more tweets...
