Ever since the new version of Digg was announced three months ago, it has undergone a lot of revisions and caused a lot of turmoil. In that time, Kevin Rose replaced Jay Adelson as CEO , reportedly unhappy with the direction Adelson was taking the company and the product. The New Digg is almost here though, and we have access to the preview. We’ve been playing around with the new interface and its many features, and we’ve compared...

Social news site Digg is set to launch a large overhaul of its service very soon. The new site has already entered Alpha testing , and one such tester has leaked screenshots of the new interface. Manmohanjit Singh uploaded the shots below , which we found courtesy of The Next Web . Singh claims he is not an Alpha tester, but that he received the images from a friend. The screenshots would appear to be legitimate, since they’re almost identical...

A couple of weeks ago, Digg (finally) launched its official iPhone application to much fanfare . Like all first versions, however, it suffered from a couple of glitches, some of which have been addressed in this latest update , which brings the version number to 1.1.0. The list of improvements and fixes is as follows: – Closing the app on a Digg story page doesn’…  Read More →

There’s a major shakeup to report at Digg today: Jay Adelson is stepping down as CEO, effective immediately. Adelson will be replaced by Kevin Rose, who founded the site back in 2004 and has to much extent remained the face of the company through his role as co-host of online video show Diggnation. The Muppets are rapidly becoming socially savvy, and the result is one burnt muppet. First they stormed YouTube with the Muppet rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody in 1080p . Then they followed that up with an iPhone app and more videos , most of which have become viral sensations. Now the Muppets, specifically Beaker, Statler, and Waldorf, are taking on YouTube commenters and Diggers with their latest clip, “Beaker’s Ballad,” which...

Digg is perhaps the best example of how things change fast on the Internet. A couple of years ago it was every tech blog’s darling and the best place to get news. The actions of its community were widely reported on . It was generally regarded as the next big thing. Fast forward to now, and it simply hasn’t happened. Digg is still a very cool site, but the next big thing it is not. Facebook and Twitter have assumed that…  Read More →

One of the most useful aspects of social media has been its power to help people discover people, content, and ideas that they would have otherwise missed. Born from that shared desire for discovery has been an abundance of incredible web communities. Some like Slashdot focus on technology, while others such as Twitter are mainstream open platforms for sharing. Out of all of these communities though, a few stand out due to their highly engaged...

As of today, Digg is five years old . Think about that: that’s around 1825 days of story submissions, front page wrangling, and explosive growth . Hell, Digg is older than Twitter and YouTube . Now that we’ve had half a decade to digg and be dugg, it seems like a perfect time to reflect on Digg’s history, growth, and struggles. While there are many events that shaped the character of the social bookmarking site, five events...

The unfortunate thing about commenting on blogs is that it’s all too often basically a silo: your message lives in one place, requires a specific login for that site alone, and can be difficult to share out if you feel you’ve been particularly insightful. Systems like Disqus (which we use on Mashable) have been developed to start addressing the silo problem, providing a unifying login for sites that employ it and a way to track and...
